Countywide : Freedom Fleeting for Escaped Inmate

A 22-year-old convicted drug dealer who escaped from an Orange County Jail work crew was captured Wednesday morning after less than a day of freedom, sheriff’s officials said.

Two sheriff’s investigators caught Gary Todd Reres after a short chase near Orange Avenue and Beach Boulevard in Anaheim, Sheriff’s Lt. Dick Olson said. Olson said he would not reveal what led investigators to the area or what Reres was doing.

“I can tell you one thing he wasn’t doing--and that was expecting our fugitive investigators to show up,” Olson said.

Reres escaped Tuesday afternoon from a work crew at the county’s Fruit Street garage in Santa Ana, Olson said. The Fullerton resident had been serving a sentence on a drug conviction at the minimum-security James A. Musick Branch Jail in Irvine. He was scheduled to be released Jan. 5, Olson said.

Reres will be charged with felony escape and no longer will be allowed to serve his time in a minimum-security jail, Olson said.
