LOS ANGELES : School District to Seek Mediator for Teacher Talks

Share

The Los Angeles Unified School District will ask the state this week to appoint a mediator to help break deadlocked negotiations with its teachers union, an official said Wednesday.

The district will file a request for mediation with the state Public Employment Relations Board, asking for a third party to intervene in its negotiations with United Teachers-Los Angeles. The district will also request a mediator for its contractual talks with the unit representing school police.

Other employee units have also requested mediation, officials said.

UTLA President Helen Bernstein has blasted the district’s proposal to close a $247.3-million budget gap by slashing salaries and imposing furlough days.
