City Councilman Tom Daly has called an 11:30 a.m. press conference today on the steps of City Hall to announce whether he will run for mayor against incumbent Fred Hunter.
Daly, who has been on the council since 1988, is an executive with the Building Industry Assn., a builders trade group.
“I’m still talking my decision over with my family and my campaign advisers, but I’ll let everybody know” today, Daly said in an interview this week. Daly is also seeking reelection to the council.
Hunter, who is finishing his second two-year term as mayor, said he will have no comment until after Daly’s announcement.
Anaheim chooses its mayor in a manner that is unique in Orange County.
In most cities, voters elect the council members, who annually choose one of their own to be mayor.
In Anaheim, the voters every two years directly elect the mayor from among any council members who choose to run. That will change in 1994, when anyone, council member or not, will be eligible to run for mayor.
The mayor in Anaheim, as in other cities, chairs the City Council meetings, has one vote just like the other council members and has no major powers that the other members do not possess.
City Hall is at 200 S. Anaheim Blvd.
