Definitive : Straight Talk on Fall Skirts

Share

Whether it’s wrap-around, zip-to-the-hip or sarong style, the snug straight skirt returns hemlines to just below the knee, to the ankles--or anywhere in between.

The fit? Reminiscent of the pencil skirts of the ‘50s, today’s fitted waist and tapered length reveal the shape of the hip and the curve of the calf.

The form-fitting long “tube” skirt is like the “hobble” skirts worn at the turn of the century. Then women had to take tiny steps because of the skirt’s very narrow ankle opening. Nowadays, thigh-high slits offer the opportunity for a long stride in a straight skirt. The slits also make for great leg displays. Some unslit, long skirts have bottom flares to ease walking.

Menswear detailing makes the crossover into the female realm with the “dandy” look in skirt suits that flaunt the tailored look with stretchy fabrics and offbeat pocket and button effects.

The fabric? Wool is the star in crepe jersey, cashmere blend, flannel, challis and gabardine. Blends that add a modern look to classic silhouettes and offer room to move are wool/nylon, wool/Lycra and nylon/Lycra.

The print? Checks and pin stripes, again borrowed from men’s suits, draw attention in subtle or bold displays.

The color? Muted shades of tan, including the all-important camel, heather browns and grays, charcoals and black.

Top off your choice with matching jacket and vest for polish, a bodysuit for simplicity or a leather jacket for the urban run.
