FULLERTON : Redo of Auditorium Moves Step Closer

Share

The planned renovation of historic Plummer Auditorium is one step closer to reality now that the City Council and Fullerton Union High School District have agreed on a future use for the building.

After several months of negotiations, an agreement was hammered out Tuesday that will enable the city to save 50% on the rent on days there are no performances scheduled. The auditorium is expected to host performances of the Fullerton Civic Light Opera company.

In addition, the school district will be guaranteed a rent increase of at least 2% per year.

The auditorium, built in 1929, is located on the Fullerton High School campus and is frequently used for school activities such as student concerts, plays and graduation ceremonies.

The renovation of the auditorium will include installation of air conditioning, new sound and lighting systems and new seats, said George West, district superintendent for business services.

The auditorium’s 132-pipe organ will also be repaired. “If we don’t do something, we will lose the organ because the pipes are deteriorating,” West said.

The city’s Redevelopment Agency is paying for the bulk of the estimated $2.3 million that it will cost for the renovations.
