Industry : Housing Law Exemption

Share

A proposed bill to exempt the City of Industry from state-mandated housing requirements was approved Wednesday by the Assembly Ways and Means Committee in Sacramento.

The committee voted 18-1 for Senate Bill 1718, with Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Los Angeles) opposed. The full Assembly will vote on the measure within two weeks.

Sponsored by Sen. Frank Hill (R-Whittier), the bill would let Industry pay $8 million annually to the state housing department to avoid state requirements for low- and moderate-income housing within its city limits. Opponents believe that passage would set a precedent for other cities to similarly avoid such housing.

But Industry officials say housing is incompatible with the city’s purpose. Founded in 1957 to foster business and manufacturing, Industry has only 631 residents in 67 housing units, including 200 people in a convalescent home.
