Albert Ferrer chipped a loose ball over Polish goalkeeper Aleksander Klak in the final minute to give Spain a 3-2 victory and its first Olympic soccer gold medal Saturday night.

The goal sent the crowd of 95,000 at FC Barcelona’s Nou Camp Stadium, which included King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia and Juan Antonio Samaranch, International Olympic Committee president, into a flag- waving, song-singing, drum-banging frenzy.

David Villabona set up the goal with a shot from the top of the penalty area that was blocked in a crowd of players. The rebound came to the right side of the area and Ferrer put it in from about 10 yards.

The Spanish players mobbed Ferrer and they fell in a mass before getting up and racing back to defend the final seconds.

Poland opened the scoring with a goal by Wojciech Kowalczyk.

Spain tied the score at the 65th minute when FC Barcelona midfielder Josep Guardiola sent a free kick from the far side of the penalty area. Abelardo Fernandez was standing at the far post and headed it into the near corner.

Spain took the lead in the 71st minute, when Ferrer led Francisco Narvaez in the penalty area. Narvaez twisted a shot back across the goal from 10 yards and past Klak.

Poland rallied to tie with less than 15 minutes remaining. Ryszard Staniek took a chip pass in the area from Kowalczyk and knocked the ball over sprawled goalkeeper Antonio Jimenez.

It was Spain’s second medal in Olympic soccer, the first a silver in 1920 at Antwerp.
