KIDS’ STYLE

In March, Sarah Patterson, a former television commercial producer, opened Sarah Patterson & Co. in West Hollywood, a children’s store specializing in classic European children’s clothes. But it’s the hair salon in back, designed to resemble a submarine with a fish tank in every porthole, that amuses young customers such as Miro Terrell, 7, and Kayla Miller, 4. Meanwhile, 5-year-old Sam Bartman of West Los Angeles is more at home on the range. A born cowboy, Sam can usually be found taking riding lessons or enjoying an imaginary gallop alongside the wild mustangs on his bedroom wall. His room was designed by his mother, Barbara Bartman (she owns Auntie Barbara’s Antiques and Auntie Barbara’s Kids), who found most of the Western paraphernalia at antique shows and swap meets. Sam’s increasingly valuable collection of old Pendleton and Beacon blankets, plus ‘50s lunch boxes featuring Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers, may someday pay for his college tuition, but his mother didn’t plan it that way. “It’s all for him to play with,” she says.
