There is very little gentle about this Ben.

Ben Johnson, the man who marred the Seoul Olympics by testing positive for steroids after winning the 100 meters, left a thumbprint on the Barcelona Games, too, Sunday.

He was expelled from the Olympic village when he pushed a security person and a volunteer. Johnson showed up without his credential and the dispute began when he wasn’t allowed in. No charges were filed and Johnson flew home, as scheduled, Sunday.

The head of the security checkpoint, Manuel Gomez, said Sunday night the incident was far from minor.

“It was Johnson’s fault,” he said, adding he had not seen the confrontation but was going on what staff on an earlier shift told him. “Ben Johnson kicked the volunteer and shoved him. I don’t know why.”

This a daily roundup of Olympic-related items from reporters in Barcelona from the Los Angeles Times, Newsday and Baltimore Sun, all Times-Mirror newspapers.
