United Joins Opposition to USAir Deal: British Airways’ proposed $750-million investment in USAir poses a dire threat to other U.S. carriers unless they are allowed greater access to the British market, United Airlines’ chief said. Allowing the deal to go through without securing a “fair, balanced exchange of opportunities” for U.S. carriers “would be the most monumental mistake that the U.S. government has ever made in air transportation,” Stephen M. Wolf, chairman of United’s parent, UAL Corp., said in an employee newsletter. American and Delta airlines also oppose the deal.
