Affordable Health Care

Share

Freeland’s column represents the core of our society’s problems, which is the lack of the individual to take responsibility for his or her own actions. Her mother became terminally ill without medical insurance and hence lost all her possessions to medical bills.

When this illness occurred, in 1977, medical insurance was by and large very affordable to most classes of citizens. For Freeland to come out and blame the system for not having a government-mandated health coverage is ludicrous. Her mom made her choice to not carry insurance and thus faced the unfortunate consequences.

If we rely on government to make all our adult decisions, especially something as fundamental and important to a family as the purchase of proper insurance, society must look in the mirror and point the finger of blame to the person who appears there, not a political system.

If we took to heart what President Kennedy said about giving back to our country instead of everyone waiting for a government handout, we’d still be the economic and societal leader of the world instead of the leading debtor nation with a rotting self-image of helplessness, which Ms. Freeland possesses.
