Monterey Park : Basketball Lighting Fails
- Share via
A motion to make lighting of the Sierra Vista Park basketball court a priority failed at Monday’s City Council meeting when the council deadlocked 2 to 2, with Councilwoman Judy Chu absent.
Mayor Samuel Kiang had proposed the lighting after residents said the park is the only recreation area in that part of the city where children can play at night.
The Department of Parks and Recreation had recommended against the lights, estimated to cost $28,000. Also, other residents around the park objected to what they said would be added noise and trash.
Kiang and Mayor Pro Tem Fred Balderrama voted in favor of the lighting, with Councilwomen Marie T. Purvis and Rita Valenzuela against.
