‘The Comeback Kid’

Share

This is not an attempt by a mere mortal to denigrate the undoubted and very considerable talents of Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and Harry Thomason (“Designing Presidential Politics,” July 25), but wasn’t the lead just a tad overblown? It stated that Bloodworth-Thomason claims she wrote the line for Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton to announce himself as “the comeback kid” when he won the nomination.

The record seems to show that Clinton first spoke the “comeback kid” line the Tuesday night of the New Hampshire primary way back in February. That was when he came in a strong second after almost bombing out of the race over the Gennifer Flowers story and other “character” attacks. I remember seeing him on national TV referring to himself as “the comeback kid” and reading about it in The Times the next morning. Surely it was in newspaper headlines across the nation.

The Times reported on Feb. 19 that Clinton said: “New Hampshire tonight has made Bill Clinton the comeback kid.”
