WOODLAND HILLS : Retiree Is Honored for Volunteer Work

Kenneth Worthen, a retired gas company executive from Woodland Hills, received the Fernando Award on Friday for his numerous volunteer activities in the San Fernando Valley.
In its 34th year, the Fernando Award is given to any citizen judged to have done the most to improve the quality of life of San Fernando Valley residents.
Worthen, 70, former president of the Van Nuys Area Chamber of Commerce, has raised more than $700,000 for a variety of charitable causes and has sat on the boards of many organizations.
Worthen has headed a variety of nonprofit organizations in the Valley, including the New Directions for Youth, Valley Economic Development Center, Mid-Valley YMCA, El Proyecto del Barrio and the Southern California Swimming Assn. He will also be honored at Nov. 6 dinner.
