TURN THE PAGE: Quincy Jones’ new hip-hop magazine has gone through some changes before even hitting the stands. Most noticeably, it had to change its name from Volume to Vibe--the original title was already taken by an English alternative rock magazine. Priced at $2.50, the monthly debuts Sept. 14, published by the Quincy Jones Entertainment Co. and the Time Warner subsidiary Time Publishing Ventures.
The publishers are keeping a tight grip on the galleys at this point, but the lineup for the first issue shows a focus beyond music into the full range of hip-hop culture. Among the stories are the usual celebrity features (including Bobby Brown and Naughty By Nature), a look at girl gangs and director John Singleton talking about racial tension in L.A. The magazine will be launched at a party on Sept. 10--when L.A. will be packed with stars for the MTV video awards--at the Hollywood dance club Spice.
