Walnut : Chamber Bailout Put on Hold

Share

The Walnut Valley Chamber of Commerce may soon be out on the streets.

Hard hit by declining membership in recent years, the chamber got a $7,000 infusion from the city in January. It’s now seeking an additional $6,750 to pay for its office lease for the next 12 months.

But the city might not provide bailout funds this time.

At last week’s meeting, the City Council, acting as the board of the Walnut Redevelopment Agency, agreed to delay the request until Sept. 9. The council said it would consider the additional funding only if chamber officials present a plan to revive the operation.

Mayor H. Thomas Sykes said the chamber has been told for several years that it should be self-supporting.
