Ice-T Controversy

Share

In response to “Outrage and Ice-T: What Is the Responsibility of the Artist?” editorial, Aug. 4:

Freedom without responsibility is anarchy. For democracy to function effectively, everyone’s rights must be protected. Expression inciting to action against individuals or groups would destroy the rights of the target and crosses the line over free speech guarantees into behavior, which society justly judges.

Expression of protest is fundamental to democratic ideals, but expression promoting behaviors of hate, violence or oppression should not be permitted.

In recognizing the fine line between expression and behavior, the Supreme Court ruled that falsely shouting “Fire!” in a crowded theater is culpable.

Isn’t our entire society now the “crowded theater”?
