Famine and War in Somalia
As an American Somali-Ethiopian, I am encouraged by the coverage, though belated, The Times accorded to the carnage of Somalia (“A Blood Debt Comes Due in Somalia,” Commentary, Aug. 7). Your article not only enlightened us about the past marriage of interests between America and Somalia, but it squarely placed a share of the responsibility of saving the Somali people on the doorsteps of America. America is morally obliged to pay its share of the United Nations package to finance a peace mission for Somalia’s salvage.
But Somalia can be saved only by either placing the entire country under a U.N. trusteeship or recolonizing it. This is acceptable to many Somalians so long as it ends the despicable killings masterminded by two warlords.
