IBM, Sears Form Phone, Data Transmission Service: IBM and Sears said they will merge their computer networking services to form a new company that will be controlled by the computer maker. The company, Advantis, will offer both telephone and data transmission services to major corporations. Using such services, known as outsourcing, appeals to companies that don’t want to spend the money to build their own computer and phone networks. International Business Machines Corp. and Sears, Roebuck & Co. individually have sold time on their computer networks to other companies. Under the new venture they will combine these operations and serve 550 cities in 92 countries, the companies said.
