COSTA MESA : City Gives Funds for Shopping Campaign

Share

In an effort to get people to spend their money in Costa Mesa, the City Council this week agreed to contribute money to a monthlong shopping campaign sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

Fiscally conservative Councilwoman Sandra L. Genis complained that chamber officials have been holding out their hands too much recently.

“I am distressed that every month the chamber comes in asking for money for this program or that program,” said Genis, who, in the end, voted to fund the project.

The council had to juggle finances to give the chamber $3,200 for local cable company ads plus an additional $1,800.

The campaign, Shop Costa Mesa, includes advertising in newspapers, magazines and cable television for the entire month of October. It is designed to get residents to think about helping the community by keeping their business within the city.

Jim Ferryman, chamber vice president, told the council that Shop Costa Mesa would officially get underway in September when businesses will be encouraged to participate and provide funding. Chamber officials hope to encourage each resident to spend at least $1 in Costa Mesa that they might otherwise spend elsewhere.
