Long Beach : Auditor to Examine Queen Mary Maintenance

Share

Long Beach Auditor Robert E. Fronke will seek to determine whether the Walt Disney Co. has properly maintained the Queen Mary ocean liner, which needs $27 million in repairs and maintenance.

Councilman Warren Harwood requested the audit Tuesday, and the City Council voted 8 to 0 to refer the matter to Fronke and other city officials. Councilwoman Doris Topsy-Elvord was absent.

Harwood has questioned whether the Harbor Department, which has jurisdiction over the city-owned ship, allowed Disney and previous operators to avoid costly maintenance.

A recent consultant’s report said the ship needs $27 million in maintenance and repairs over the next five years. The report said poor maintenance contributed to the general deterioration of the vessel.
