BURBANK : After-School Program Funded

Share

The Burbank City Council approved plans Tuesday to begin an after-school recreation program for children at Emerson Elementary School, currently the only elementary school in the Burbank Unified School District without a child-care program.

The council allocated $14,625 in start-up costs for the program. City officials, however, anticipate that the money will be recouped because parents will be charged $15 a week to keep their children at the school until 5:30 p.m., said Mary J. Alvord, director of the Parks and Recreation Department.

In other action, the council gave $11,200 in general funds to the Burbank Noon Lions Club to buy books for Quest, an anti-drug program for middle school children. Quest is similar to the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program but instead targets children in their early teen-age years while DARE focuses on elementary school children.
