Mexican Juice Being Recalled
A Texas company is recalling canned juice imported from Mexico that may be contaminated with lead, state and federal authorities said Wednesday.
Lead solder used to seal the sides of cans is believed to be the cause of contamination in several varieties of Jumex brand fruit nectars and juice, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Michigan Department of Agriculture said.
The recall was issued after a child in San Diego developed lead poisoning, apparently after drinking several cans of Jumex daily.
Regular exposure to high levels of lead can cause permanent damage to the nervous system.
Vilore Foods Co. imports the juice from Mexico and sells it to dealers throughout the United States. There was no answer Wednesday night at Vilore Foods’ headquarters in Laredo, Texas.
The recalled products include apple, apricot, guava, mango, papaya-pineapple, peach, pear, plum and tamarind nectars, as well as pineapple juice.
