Gala Raises $150,000 for Minority Foundation

Golden State Minority Foundation’s “Salute to Minority Education” gala at the Regent Beverly Wilshire has raised more than $150,000 to date. Honoree Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb, president emeritus of Cal State Fullerton, delivered the keynote address. KCBS-TV weatherman Steve Rambo was emcee at the June 2 benefit. Proceeds will provide scholarships for students and grants to educational programs.

Motion Picture and Television Fund received $155,000, proceeds raised at the 10th Annual Golden Boot Awards gala Aug. 15 at the Century Plaza Hotel. Honorees included Ann Miller, A. C. Lyles and Tom Selleck. Pat Buttram was emcee.

Blind Children’s Center of Los Angeles, Beverly Hills CPR, DARE Programs and the Beverly Hills Education Foundation will share $75,000 raised July 26 at the 12th Annual Beverly Hills Charity Car Show. The event, held at Beverly Hills High School, was produced by Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories and sponsored by Cadillac Motor Car Division.

City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute in Duarte will receive more than $260,000 raised at the Aug. 7 softball game at Hart Park, Orange. Major vendors competing in the Home Depot and HomeBase event included Dutchboy, Black & Decker, 3M, Rubbermaid and Price Pfister. Arthur Blank, president of THD, and Jim Halpin, president of HomeBase, umpired the game.

Pepperdine University, Malibu, has announced receipt of a $1.5-million donation from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation. The gift for Pepperdine’s art gallery, which includes $300,000 in matching grants, will help pay construction and operating costs. The gallery, named the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, is scheduled to open Sept. 12.

Orthopaedic Hospital has announced receipt of a $200,000 grant from the Weingart Foundation to be used for the Los Angeles County Pediatric Acute Injury Program. The program provides emergency treatment for children from South and East Los Angeles suffering from trauma-related injuries. The hospital is a private, not-for-profit specialized treatment, education and research center in downtown Los Angeles.

Fred Jordan Mission received a $40,000 donation July 28 from Operation: Children to help equip its new learning center. FJM, in downtown Los Angeles, has been serving the needy and homeless for the past 40 years.

Rebuild L.A. received more than $14,000 from the downtown law firm of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton on July 27. Donations were raised at the firm’s annual golf tournament.
