Jose Canseco hit a grand slam in the seventh inning and Carney Lansford hit a three-run homer in the ninth as the Oakland Athletics rallied to beat the New York Yankees, 8-6, Thursday night at New York.

Yankee rookie Sam Militello pitched four-hit ball for 6 2/3 innings and striking out 10, but the bullpen let him down. He left with a 6-1 lead in the seventh and the bases loaded, but John Habyan gave up Canseco’s fourth career grand slam and 22nd home run of the season.

Then in the ninth, pinch-hitter Jerry Browne singled with one out off Steve Farr (1-2) and Rickey Henderson walked. Lansford, five for 36 against the Yankees this season, followed with his fifth home run. It was Farr’s sixth blown save in 24 chances, and the fifth time this season Oakland has won when trailing in the ninth inning.

Jeff Parrett (8-1) pitched two perfect innings for the victory and Dennis Eckersley got three outs for his major league-leading 38th save in 39 chances. The A’s are 50-0 in games in which Eckersley has pitched.

Militello, a 22-year-old right-hander, gave up only one hit in seven shutout innings in his debut, a 6-0 victory over Boston on Aug. 9, then gave up only two runs and six hits over eight innings in a 4-2 victory at Chicago on Saturday.

Oakland starter Ron Darling got tagged for a season-high 11 hits and six runs in 3 2/3 innings. Three runs were unearned because of a first-inning error by shortstop Walt Weiss.

Cleveland 2, Minnesota 1--Paul Sorrento doubled home the winning run with one out in the 10th inning and the Indians beat the Twins at Cleveland for a three-game sweep.

The Indians managed only three hits, including two by Sorrento, and still sent the Twins to their season-worst fifth consecutive loss.

Kevin Tapani (13-8) limited Cleveland to one run on two hits through nine innings before losing it in the 10th. He had never pitched longer than nine innings before.

Baltimore 2, Seattle 1--Leadoff hitter Brady Anderson tripled to open the 10th inning at Baltimore and Mike Devereaux followed with a sacrifice fly as Orioles ended a four-game losing streak.

The Orioles tied the score, 1-1, in the eighth on Devereaux’s RBI triple and went on to end Seattle’s four-game winning streak.

Seattle outhit Baltimore, 11-5, and stranded 13 runners.

Texas 6, Chicago 1--Roger Pavlik, a 24-year-old rookie recalled from triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 13, earned his first major league victory and came within one strike of a shutout as the Rangers won at Chicago.

Juan Gonzalez and Rafael Palmeiro homered as Texas ended a five-game losing streak. Chicago had won four in a row, and won 12 of its last 13 home games.

Pavlik (1-1) pitched a six-hitter, and the only run he allowed came on George Bell’s 20th homer on an 0-and-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth inning.

Milwaukee 16, Toronto 3--Robin Yount--trying to end a two-month slump as he chases 3,000 hits--tripled, doubled and singled as the Brewers got 10 extra-base hits at Milwaukee.

Yount, Darryl Hamilton and Paul Molitor each drove in three runs as the third-place Brewers moved within 4 1/2 games of the AL East-leading Blue Jays.

Yount, who entered the game in a one-for-33 slump, is 23 hits shy of 3,000.
