OXNARD : Journalism Teacher to Lead Association
An Oxnard College instructor has become president of the international Community College Journalism Assn., school officials have announced.
The group represents more than 1,700 community college journalism programs.
Installed at a ceremony in Montreal this month, Dr. Gary Morgan vowed to lobby for journalism programs at a time when declining budgets have prompted some schools to drop courses in journalism.
“Too often, colleges say they can do without journalism,” Morgan said. “But by cutting the classes, the schools are also cutting out student newspapers and, in effect, silencing the voice of the students.”
Morgan, 48, is past president of the Southern California Region of the Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges, and a founding member of the Ventura County Press Club. During his eight years as adviser to the Oxnard College Observer student newspaper, Oxnard students have won 72 regional and national awards.
