Retired Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan was hospitalized this week and spent a day under intensive care, a court spokeswoman said Friday.

Brennan, 86, remained at Bethesda Naval Medical Center on Friday night, but his condition was “much better,” said spokeswoman Toni House.

She said the former justice was admitted to the hospital Wednesday and spent 24 hours under intensive care before his condition improved.

The spokeswoman said doctors had not determined the precise source of Brennan’s complaint. She declined to elaborate on his ailment but said it was “not life-threatening.”

Brennan cited failing health as one reason for retiring from the nation’s highest court in July, 1990. He suffered a small stroke in 1979 and another just prior to retiring. In 1978 he underwent radiation treatments for a cancerous tumor in his throat.

He was briefly hospitalized in July for intestinal discomfort.
