From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A rocket carrying a cable television satellite on a $150-million mission was blown up more than 100 miles above the Atlantic Ocean after its booster failed and it tumbled out of control. Everything appeared to go well as the 14-story Atlas rocket rose from its seaside pad at Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. But Air Force officials issued self-destruct commands to the unmanned rocket after the booster failed less than eight minutes into the flight. The debris crashed into the ocean more than 1,000 miles offshore.
