A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE?
Regarding Garden Grove Councilman J. Tilman Williams’ position on Esperanto (“Melting Pot,” by Kimberly Heinrichs, Palm Latitudes, July 26): Esperanto never caught on with even a significant minority because it makes no practical sense.
There is, and has been for some time, the practical equivalent of a universal language: English. It is the international language of science, technology, finance and trade. If one were to attend a scientific conference in, say, Stockholm, and a Japanese person wanted to speak to a German, they would converse in English. Most of the papers presented in gatherings throughout the world are in English. Most verbal intercourse in the United Nations is in English.
