Rutten Raises an Unusual Point
Tim Rutten’s column (“Between the Poles: Views on Abortion,” Aug. 13) was a reasoned and eloquent statement about the indecision and passion attendant on the “pro-choice/pro-life” controversy. At last he has raised the point that seems to have escaped almost everyone in all the years of debate.
The First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and separation of church and state. This is not a Catholic nation and I have been astounded to see the extent to which the (Roman Catholic) church has influenced other religious groups and has whipped to a frenzy people who would not ordinarily side with them.
I have great respect for the Catholic Church (and all others). I would never try to change their beliefs or stand in the way of their practice of religion.
I beseech them to expend their energies on their own people and leave others to examine their own conscience and deal with their God uninterrupted and unmolested.
