Business Confidence Index Rebounds: A barometer of U.S. business confidence rebounded in August, suggesting that many corporate executives believe that the recovery may pause, though not falter and die. “Although the current recovery may seem unsure about where it’s headed, the overall trend is decidedly up,” said the Cahners business confidence index. The monthly index, compiled by Cahners Economics of Newton, Mass., increased to 64.1 in August after falling to 63.3 in July from a record high of 66.8 during June. The survey, launched last summer, tracks U.S. business plans for production, sales and marketing, inventory expansion and hiring.
