TECHNOLOGY : Officials’ Stories Differ on Relocation of Loral Aeronutronic’s Employees
- Share via
The confusion continues for Loral Aeronutronic’s 1,700 employees in Newport Beach.
Bernard Schwartz, chairman of parent Loral Corp. in New York, told the Dallas Morning News that 300 to 500 jobs will probably be transferred from Newport Beach to a plant in Camden, Ark. Loral will acquire the Arkansas plant Aug. 31 as part of its $475-million purchase of the aerospace operation of Dallas-based LTV Corp.
Schwartz’s comments contradicted statements made only a few days earlier by James Woolnough, manager of the Aeronutronic plant. Woolnough had said that fewer than 300 missile assembly jobs--most likely 100 to 200--would be transferred out of state. The bulk of the rest of the jobs, he said, would be relocated to another site, preferably in Orange County, before Loral’s lease on the Newport Beach site expires in 1998.
Woolnough also said Loral Aeronutronic, rather than executives in New York, will make the decision about any relocation.
Loral officials did not return calls asking for an explanation of the contradictory statements.
