LOS ANGELES : Judge OKs Settlement of Suit Over School Resources

Share

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge formally approved an agreement Tuesday that settles a landmark lawsuit aimed at rectifying years of alleged inequities between schools in middle-class and poorer neighborhoods.

By signing the agreement, Judge Ralph Nutter called for immediate implementation of a five-year plan to redistribute resources within the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The consent decree calls for an equalization of district spending so that each campus receives the same amount of money per pupil.

The class-action lawsuit claimed that poor and minority children received an inferior education because of patterns that concentrated younger, lower-paid teachers in their neighborhood schools.
