LOS ANGELES : State Won’t Enter Dispute Between Schools, Teachers
The state Public Employment Relations Board decided Tuesday not to appoint a mediator to help move along negotiations between the Los Angeles Unified School District and its teachers’ union, an official said.
In declining the district’s request for intervention, public employment relations specialist Charles McClamma said negotiations between the district and United Teachers-Los Angeles could continue and be productive without the assistance of a third party.
The district last week asked the state to appoint a mediator, saying it needed intervention to help break an impasse in talks with its largest bargaining group, UTLA. The teachers’ union in turn filed an unfair practice charge with the board, alleging that the district had not acted in good faith by calling for a mediator without the union’s agreement and without trying first to reach a settlement.
Either the district or union can file another request for a mediator at a later date, McClamma said.
