CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE : Class Aids Employers of Disabled

Share

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded $84,232 to Cal State Northridge for a project that trains employers, rehabilitation counselors and others in the workplace how to deal with people who have learning disabilities.

CSUN’s disabled students department conducts the project, which features workshops for local employers, said Alice Curtis, trainer for the three-year grant.

She said she anticipates more employers will attend the workshops because of the newly passed federal American Disabilities Act, which requires employers to provide stable employment for learning disabled adults.

Curtis said she hopes the training made possible by the grant will “bridge the gap between education and employment for the learning disabled adult.”

About 1,000 CSUN students have a learning disability, Curtis said. Approximately 300 are enrolled in the university’s learning disabled program.
