An opponent of nuclear weapons who barged on stage while former President Ronald Reagan was speaking in April waived a preliminary hearing Friday on state charges of malicious destruction of property.

Rick Springer, 41, appeared before a justice of the peace.

He remains free on his own recognizance on state and federal charges, in connection with the incident, in which the former President was struck by flying glass and shoved to one side.

Springer charged on stage at the National Association of Broadcasters convention April 13. He grabbed a crystal statue of an eagle that had been presented to Reagan and smashed it, then tried to take the microphone and speak.

Springer, of Arcata, Calif., said he wanted to speak to the broadcasters on the issue of nuclear weapons testing. He was among a group of anti-nuclear activists who held a series of demonstrations during the NAB convention.
