Alaska Official Files Suit to Block Recall Movement

JUNEAU, Alaska — Alaska’s attorney general has sued the state election chief in an attempt to derail a recall vote against Gov. Walter J. Hickel and his lieutenant governor.
State elections director Charlot Thickstun certified petitions outlining why Hickel and Lt. Gov. Jack Coghill should be recalled, and released the petitions Thursday so organizers could start gathering signatures.
Hours later, Attorney General Charlie Cole filed a lawsuit charging the petitions are too vague to meet the requirements of state law.
The petitions allege Hickel and Coghill are unfit for office and incompetent.
