Thumbs down: “You come across the realism of discrimination. There are some companies in Orange County that are not willing to change their front office appearance. You still have companies asking for blondes when I know that people of all colors could do the job very well.”
Advice: “You need to have a genuine love for people and the desire to help people, otherwise you couldn’t do this job. There are times you’re going to go above and beyond what the job calls for. Sometimes you may have to drive them to a job site, or baby-sit for an hour or two.”
Salary range: $18,000 to $70,000 yearly.
Fringe benefits: Full-time managers generally receive paid vacation, sick leave, medical, dental and life insurance.
Hours: Many personnel managers work more than 40 hours a week, as overtime is often required to attend meetings, meet deadlines and handle peak workloads.
Educational and training requirements: A bachelor’s degree is generally the minimum requirement, though many employers prefer a master’s in business administration or industrial relations.
Size of work force: Medium. In Orange County, between 2,300 and 2,900 people, or 0.2% of the labor force, work as personnel managers or employment interviewers.
Expected demand: Some growth is expected as new companies are started and others expand.
