GM Giving Classes to Laid-Off Van Nuys Workers: General Motors Van Nuys plant, which shut down last week after 45 years of car making, reopened Monday as a school for laid-off auto workers. About 150 former employees showed up for classes in math, English, reading and other subjects, said GM spokesman Patrick Morrissey. The training is part of a contract agreement with 2,600 United Auto Workers members who lost their jobs. The classes, free to the laid-off workers, are scheduled to run until September, 1993. About 1,200 other workers have enrolled in vocational schools and colleges. Those who enrolled in education programs receive 100% pay and benefits plus tuition assistance.
