MOSCOW : A Russian Mediator

Share

Hoping to stop conflicts raging south of his border, Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin has invited Georgian President Eduard A. Shevardnadze and the chiefs of several small, mostly Muslim regions of Russia to talks Thursday aimed at ending ethnic fighting along the Black Sea.

Abkhazia, a mostly Muslim enclave, declared independence from Christian Georgia last month, triggering fighting that has seen reports of hundreds killed on both sides. The leaders of some Muslim regions of Russia are sending troops to battle on the Abkhazian side.
