The grant--announced by U.S. Education Secretary Lamar Alexander as part of the federal government’s effort to help rebuild riot-torn neighborhoods--will be used to provide English lessons, vocational training and literacy instruction to 1,200 students, and job training and placement to another 1,590 people.

The one-year project will be coordinated through the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
