Irwindale : 4-Day Workweek Rejected
A proposal to reduce costs by closing City Hall on Fridays and converting to a four-day, 10-hour workweek was rejected by the City Council.
A similar plan to put police officers on a three-day, 12-hour workweek also was rejected.
The four-day, 10-hour workweek has been established in 37 cities in Los Angeles County. Proponents say its benefits include extended evening hours and reduction of sick leave, overtime and utility operating costs.
Several city employees and police officers spoke out in favor of the plan. Council members Jacquelyn Breceda and Julian A. Miranda voted to try the proposal, but Mayor Robert Diaz and Councilman Frederick Barbosa voted against it, saying the City Hall hours would inconvenience residents and that the hours would strain police officers. Councilman Patricio Miranda abstained on both votes.
