Orange County residents have donated more than $72,000 to the American Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Andrew, officials reported Wednesday.
More than 30,000 callers nationwide contributed $2.5 million to the relief effort in response to President Bush’s nationally televised appeal Tuesday night. A steady stream of calls came into the Orange County chapter in Santa Ana, with individual donations ranging from $25 to $1,000, officials reported.
“Any size donation will help and is appreciated,” said Terry Hartshorn, chairman of the Orange County Red Cross board of directors.
The Red Cross will accept small donations of food or clothing, but gives most of its aid in cash vouchers because they are easier to ship.
Those interested in donating can call the Red Cross at (714) 835-5381.
