PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Slimmed-Down Perry, Bears Agree

William Perry came back to Chicago, hoping to plug a 320-pound gap in the middle of the Bears’ defensive line.

His holdout has been as much about weight as about money. Coach Mike Ditka wanted Perry, who finished last season at close to 400 pounds, to report at no more than 320, the least he’s weighed as a pro. He was in and out of camp earlier in the week, weighing in at 322 and finally came to terms Wednesday after meeting with team officials for several hours.

Other holdouts signed or came to terms, including Eric Allen, the Philadelphia Eagles’ best cornerback and a Pro Bowl player last season. Allen signed three one-year contracts estimated to total $3.6 million.

The Buffalo Bills welcomed back their final two holdouts, tight end Keith McKeller and cornerback Kirby Jackson, both of whom agreed to two-year contracts worth undisclosed sums.

But there was nothing new to report in Cincinnati, which leads the NFL with four veteran holdouts, or Dallas, where two key offensive players--wide receiver Michael Irvin and center Mark Stepnoski are still out.

The Washington Redskins traded a draft choice to the Pittsburgh for linebacker Huey Richardson, the Steelers’ first draft choice a year ago who made two tackles in his rookie season. . . . Dallas Coach Jimmy Johnson said his starting defensive tackles, Tony Casillas and Russell Maryland, were doubtful for the Redskin game and Jimmie Jones and Danny Noonan will be their replacements. . . . A report in the San Francisco Examiner quotes 49er quarterback Joe Montana as saying he would rather play elsewhere than sit on the bench if he recovers fully from the injuries now keeping him off the field. . . . A survey by the Team Marketing Report says a family of four will spend an average of $163.70 to attend an NFL game this season.
