No. 1 Miami Gets to Easy Part, Romps Past No. 23 Iowa, 24-7

Miami, plagued by preseason problems, had no problem winning its opening game Saturday night.

Gino Torretta passed for 433 yards and two touchdowns as the top-ranked and defending national champion Hurricanes beat No. 23 Iowa, 24-7.

Miami, its preseason preparations disrupted by injuries, indictments and Hurricane Andrew, extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 19 games. It was the second consecutive defeat for Iowa, which lost to North Carolina State, 24-14, in the Kickoff Classic.

Miami dominated from start to finish, but penalties prevented the Hurricanes from running up the score before a record crowd of 70,397 at the first night game in Kinnick Stadium.

Iowa scored on a 31-yard pass play from Jim Hartlieb to Harold Jasper with 5 1/2 minutes left.

Torretta completed 31 of 51 passes, including scoring tosses of 11 yards to Kevin Williams in the second quarter and 17 yards to Darryl Spencer with 3:13 left in the game. Dane Prewitt kicked a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter and Larry Jones ran one yard for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

Coleman Bell caught seven passes for 115 yards, and Horace Copeland had seven receptions for 89 yards and Williams six for 92.
