Pulitzer for Sale: Items from author Alex Haley’s estate, including his 1977 Pulitzer Prize for “Roots” and the Emmys the TV miniseries won, will be auctioned in October to pay off the estate’s debts. The Pulitzer Prize office at Columbia University in New York says it has no record of a Pulitzer Prize ever being sold before. Haley’s estate faces more than $570,000 in claims, said George Haley, the author’s brother, who is the administrator. George Haley said he considered putting the items in a museum, but decided an auction was best for the estate. Alex Haley died of a heart attack in February at the age of 70.
