More Cellular Phone Users: The number of cellular telephone subscribers nationwide rose by 1.3 million, or 17%, to 8.9 million the first half, the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Assn. said. The group said it was “the largest number of subscribers ever added during a six-month period and the equivalent of an almost 40% annual growth rate.” The group said the industry’s gross service revenue rose 19% to $3.6 billion in the half.
