Latinos and Ethnic Envy

Navarrette’s essay should be mandatory reading for all those people claiming the system is against them.

As one who spent nine years in public schools where ethnic minorities were the majority, I can guarantee this hostility toward “acting white” exists and assures one of intimidation and physical abuse (“acting white” can consist of no more than doing well in math or history; speaking standard English is particularly hazardous). The irony is that some of the very people the system is supposedly against were working within it and succeeding. The ones who sat back and waited for the system to work for them got nothing. You have met the enemy and he is you.
