A man armed with a submachine gun and a pistol killed four women and wounded two in a mental health clinic Tuesday. He was killed by police who pursued him to a nearby building.

Police described the gunman, Eitan Mor, a Jew in his mid-20s, as mentally disturbed. The shooting in the Kiryat Hayovel district appeared unrelated to Arab-Israeli violence.

Mor was a patient at the clinic and had been treated by one of the women he shot, Israel Television reported.

Police spokesman Shmuel Ben Ruby said Mor had been discharged from the army on psychological grounds and was employed by a security company. The gunman apparently was angry at being denied a truck driver’s license, he said.

National police chief Yaacov Terner said an investigation will be conducted to determine how Mor obtained firearms.

Mor opened fire in the clinic, then ran down a street and climbed onto the roof of a single-story building, where he shot at police officers and threatened to shoot himself, police said.

Negotiators climbed onto an adjacent roof and tried to persuade him to surrender. When Mor began shooting wildly in the air, officers shot him and he died later at a hospital, police said.

The names of the dead women were not immediately released.

Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef said one of the wounded women was hit in the chest and the other suffered wounds in the hand and hip.
