Jerry Lamont Crews; Actor

Actor Jerry Lamont Crews, who appeared on Broadway, in television and motion pictures, has died at his North Hollywood home. He was 65.

Crews died Sunday of complications of emphysema, said his former wife, Kathleen Carey of North Hollywood.

Born in Birmingham, Ala., Crews served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later attended an acting school in Washington. In New York, Crews appeared on Broadway in “Sunrise at Campobello” and “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial” and on live television.

In the late 1950s he came to California, and in 1960 he appeared in the movie version of “Sunrise at Campobello.” During his lengthy career as a character actor, Crews performed in more than 300 television shows including “Police Story,” “The Waltons,” “The Streets of San Francisco” and various soap operas.

Crews is survived by his son Carey Crews of North Hollywood.

A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Sunday at Actor’s Alley Repertory Theatre, 12135 Riverside Drive, in North Hollywood. The Neptune Society in Burbank is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Crews’ name to the Motion Picture & Television Fund, 23388 Mulholland Drive, Woodland Hills 91364.
